Trumbull's Denenberg cruises to Open crown
Jason York, Register Staff June 11, 2002
CHESHIRE — Junior Scott Denenberg of Trumbull High was humble after his 6-0, 6-4 win over Ridgefield senior Ben Alexander in the singles final of the State Open boys' tennis tournament Monday at Cheshire Academy.
Besides, it would have been far too easy for Denenberg to be thrilled with his play, which was nothing short of spectacular.

Denenberg, the Class LL runner-up, carved up Alexander, the Class L champion, with a powerful serve and precise forehand.

"I had a little bit of a mental lapse at the beginning of the second set," said Denenberg, whose only loss this season was to Fairfield Prep's Todd Paul in the Class LL title match. "Other than that, it was a pretty good match."

Alexander, a classic counter-puncher who tracks down everything hit at him, could not get Denenberg to play at a deliberate pace.

"He hit some great shots and he's a great player," said Alexander of Denenberg, whom he knows quite well as both played at The Tennis Club of Trumbull. "I didn't wake up until late and my serve wasn't working for me."

In the doubles final, brothers Brian and Scott Matthews of Cheshire defeated Fairfield Prep's August Vorvis and Tom Curran 6-4, 6-2.

For Brian Matthews, it not only completed a season that also saw him win the Class L doubles title, but seven overall state or regional championships in his four-year career.

The Matthews brothers, who did not play as a doubles team during the regular season, played the big points with conviction and focus, which admittedly Vorvis and Curran did not.

"We were in every game," Vorvis said. "But we looked back (upon losing games) and let it get to us, which hurt us."

Said Scott Matthews, who is a sophomore, "We just stayed in every point, we kept it alive. We ended up winning a lot of those points, which felt good us, but probably made them feel a little worse."

Cheshire coach Jim Matthews also got to play the role of proud father and coach for a second straight week.

"Obviously, as a father I'm happy," Jim Matthews said. "It's a good way for Brian to end his career and something to get Scott really psyched about next year."
