Learn the concepts underlying modern application of computer systems. Windows, word processing, spread sheets, databases. Not to be taken for credit by computer science majors.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand common computer hardware and software terminology and appreciate the potential and risks associated with computer usage.
  • Use an operating system (MS Windows) to manage files.
  • Use software applications (MS Office):
    • Word Processor (MS Word) to prepare formatted documents
    • Spreadsheet (MS Excel) for numerical calculations
    • Database Management (MS Access) to create and query simple databases
    • Presentation (MS PowerPoint) to produce slides supporting oral presentations
  • Use the Internet to access and evaluate reference materials
  • Use the library proxy facilities to reference scholarly and peer reviewed journals
  • Understand and appreciate the ethical and social dilemma of computer usage

Desired Course outcomes:    At the completion of this course students should:

  • Students will be able to effectively use the software introduced to produce, with little effort, a variety of documents.
  • Students will understand computer hardware components and their role in making computer systems function.
